Love Your Neighbor Campaign: How One Shirt Can Help Build a Stronger Midlands

By Central SC Habitat for Humanity  ·  ReStore

What does it really mean to love your neighbor?

It is a simple question, but I believe the answer can shape a community.

Loving your neighbor means caring, encouraging, giving and showing up. At Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity, it also means creating a community where more of our neighbors can experience the stability, dignity and possibility that come with having a safe, affordable place to call home.

That belief is grounded in Habitat’s faith-based roots.

Habitat has long described this work as faith in action. To me, that means our faith should move beyond what we believe and become visible in how we serve, care for one another and show up for our neighbors.

On a build site, faith becomes action in a tangible way. Someone picks up a hammer. Someone brings lunch. Someone makes a donation. Someone teaches a skill. Someone works beside a future homeowner.

People who may worship differently, vote differently or come from different walks of life stand side by side and build something together. They may begin the day as strangers, but by the end of it, they have built more than walls. They have built a community.

That is faith in action.

And that is the spirit behind our inaugural Love Your Neighbor Campaign.

For us, Love Your Neighbor is an opportunity to make that idea personal and local. Our neighbors teach our children, care for our loved ones, work in our businesses and serve our communities. Loving our neighbors asks us to look beyond our own front doors and recognize that our well-being is connected.

From now through October 18, we are offering a limited-edition Love Your Neighbor T-shirt as a visible way for people across the Midlands to share that message.

The design was created especially for our first campaign and will be available only in limited quantities. Once the shirts are gone, they are gone, so order yours early.

Proceeds from every shirt will support Habitat’s work to help more people across the Midlands build strength, stability and opportunity through affordable homeownership.

Yes, it is a T-shirt.

But I hope it becomes so much more.

When you wear a Love Your Neighbor shirt, you are not simply supporting Habitat. You are making a visible statement about the kind of community you want to help build.

It says: I see my neighbors. I care what happens to them. I believe we are connected. And I am willing to help build a stronger community.

My hope is that we begin seeing these shirts everywhere: at grocery stores, schools, places of worship, workplaces, community events and throughout our neighborhoods.

I hope someone wears one and starts a conversation. I hope a company decides to volunteer or a faith community asks how it can become involved. Most of all, I hope the message inspires people across the Midlands to find their own way to show up for one another.

We also want to bring that message to life by gathering as a community.

On Sunday, November 8, at 4:00 p.m., we invite everyone across the Midlands to purchase a shirt and join us in front of the Lantern at Finlay Park for our first Love Your Neighbor community photo. Wear your shirt, bring your family and friends, and help us create a visible reminder of what can happen when neighbors come together.

Because Habitat has never been only about houses.

It is about people building something none of us can build alone. It is about faith in action and loving our neighbors through how we serve, give, build and show up for one another.

So this fall, buy a shirt. Wear the message. Join us at Finlay Park. Volunteer. Give. Tell someone about Habitat. Invite others to participate.

And when you see someone else wearing that shirt around town, smile. Maybe even say hello.

Because stronger communities are not built by organizations alone.

They are built by neighbors willing to show up for one another.
