Our Roots...

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry founded in Americus Georgia in 1976 by Millard Fuller with the mission of eliminating poverty housing.  From this modest beginning, Habitat has grown into a world-wide organization and ranks among the Top 20 builders in the world.

The lack of affordable housing is a critical need throughout the United States and the rest of the world.  Recent estimates indicate that more than 15 million Americans need subsidized housing because of their age, income status or disabilities, but only about 4.3 million have access to it.

"Everyone in the world deserves, at a minimum,
a simple, decent, affordable place to live."
Millard Fuller

Who we are...

Central South Carolina (Central SC) Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International that was established in 1985 with responsibility for Richland and Lexington counties.  In our area of responsibility it is estimated that 1 out of every 4 families lives in poverty.  Since our beginning in 1985, Central SC Habitat has helped over 200 Richland and Lexington county families realize the dream of home ownership.

Central SC Habitat for Humanity is one of more  than 30 Habitat affiliates in South Carolina.  Habitat affiliates are chartered by Habitat for Humanity International; each affiliate has it's own Board of Directors and is responsible for it's own funding and operations.

What we do...

leadersroof

Our families are chosen based upon need, ability to pay an interest free mortgage, and willingness to partner with our ministry in performing 350/550 hours of service.  This service includes participating in construction of Habitat houses and completing a required series of 12 "nurturing" seminars which emphasize Home Ownership and Life skills offered by our Family Services staff.

Our goal at Central SC Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing.  We realize that we cannot solve this entire problem by ourselves but we are determined to do as much as possible.  In the past several years, we have built an average of 6 - 10 houses each year.  We are currently building 10 or more houses per year and our goal is to build 20 or more houses every year.

Our ability to provide affordable housing depends upon financial support from donors and volunteer labor for construction.  We also recycle funds from our interest free mortgages into construction of new homes.

Additional funding comes from our ReStore, Habitat Harvester projects and various events such as our annual Golf Tournament and annual Gala and auction.
